Soooo, I'm interning at my fathers law firm for the summer and seeing as I really don't do much but destroy my eyesight by staring at the computer screen all day (well, except at lunch time haha) I've decided to show you what I've been spending my 9 to 5 doing.

Arrive at 8.30am looking like this (I wish!):

10 minutes later: wishing I hadn't decided to skip breakfast :(

Typed up some emails (the ONLY thing I did today smh)

Decided to discreetly take a look at my favourite tumblr account: http://missesosababy.tumblr.com/ and began obsessing over this outfit:

Then I decided to watch youtube videos and I found out that BritPopPrincess is engaged!! I'm so happy for her!!

And then I watched HotDamnIRock's new video (click here to see it) and I died laughing! Teeheeheehee

And then I somehow found my way on to Abby from The4Aces's blog: http://www.theabbysworld.com/ and I spent hours reading the WHOLE BLOG!

I found this blog post mighttyyyy interesting: Are men naturally more beautiful than women?? I wonder what do you think?

Then I decided to watch a movie 'The Players Club' with Lisa Raye, Bernie Mac and Ice Cube and although I think it was CRAP I wanted to see why everyone thinks Lisa Raye is a 'slut' and I even shed some tears when Ebony got raped

Then I went to lunch. Note to self: stop being adventurous with food! This was me after tasting 'banga soup'. Never again

And now I'm back here fixated on the computer screen once again.

I wonder what tomorrow will bring? *sigh*

Is Crime Contagious?

Since watching the 2008 film ‘Mad Money’ starring Diane Keaton, Queen Latifah and Katie Holmes (a superbly inspiring movie in my opinion), I’ve found myself thinking about the validity of the premise which justifies Diane Keaton’s wild character and which is as follows- “crime is contagious”.

If you have not seen this movie I suggest you to do so immediately! Not only does it capture what most people wish they had the cojones to do (which is to steal money from the federal government without getting caught and without detriment to the economy), it is damn hilarious!

So is crime really contagious? Would this explain why certain areas have high levels of criminal activity? Or are there other reasons why people choose to commit crime?

I have brainstormed and come up with an expansive (but definitely non-exhaustive list of reasons why people may commit crime, namely:

1.      The need for money

2.    The love for money

3.    Greed

4.    Peer pressure

5.     Boredom

6.    Sex

7.     Happiness

8.    Power

9.    Fame

10.            Drugs

11.  The need for challenge

Choosing to discuss each of these points individually would definitely be a tremendously long post which I doubt any of you would like to read. Instead, I will pick out the factors which I feel are the most widespread causes of crime and discuss a few of them in separate posts.

First we must understand that need is very different from want.

I can still vaguely remember my high school Economics teacher emphasising this in the classroom about five years ago. It is clear that people NEED money for the basic amenities such as food, clothing, housing and education which are required to survive and live even the most basic, least productive life. In this instance a person may consider it necessary to commit crimes such as theft or prostitution and I find it difficult not to be tolerant to people in such situations.

We’ve all most likely heard of the violence in the ‘hood’ or the desperation in Africa and India as portrayed by the media. This analysis may provide an explanation as to why many people who live in such poverty stricken areas may be involved in crime.

But is this proof also that crime is contagious? Does crime really spread from person to person? 

I would say that in this instance it does not. I would say that here, crime is not a disease but a solution. Crime is the cure that these people have adopted against poverty.

I will expound on some of the other factors in the list in forthcoming posts.

NICE GUYS FINISH LAST?

Although I quite appreciate the humour which the song conveys, it has got me wondering about the reality of the situation which is represents. Do nice guys really finish last? Is it truly because they are nice guys that they inadvertently end up finish last? 


These lyrics have been reiterated in countless movies in which the 'nice guy next door' is dumped for the 'bad guy' who is more often than not depicted as a player whose supposed 'cool' personality ultimately attracts the girl. 


So why is it that the girl always seems to fall for the bad guy who clearly doesn't have her best interests in mind rather than the good guy who obviously cares about her and would want nothing more than to make her happy? Is this an accurate description of reality?


It has been my experience that it is deeply rooted in human nature to want a challenge. It seems that people only want what they can't have. Anything which is seemingly within reach is no longer attractive. Nice guys are frequently portrayed as boring and unremarkable. Based on this, it seems that because the nice guy is perceived as easily accessible and in crude terms 'always available' to the girl, she will likely lose interest in his advances. 

On the other hand, the bad guy player type is not considered emotionally forthcoming and so the girl will likely  choose to pursue the possibility of getting the bad guy to commit to her.


It is in this context that the good guy is said to 'finish last'.


Now don't get me wrong, not all nice guys 'finish last'. There are girls who appreciate an honest, caring attitude. Most especially those girls who have previously been vulnerable to the 'bad guy syndrome' and have clearly learned their lesson.


The lyrics of the song are as follows: 


"Nice guys finish last,
That's why I'll treat you like trash,
It's not what I really wanna do.
But, you only date bad guys so,
I'll give it my best try to,
Treat you the way you want me to.
I never open a door, 
or pull out a chair.
You can tell me how your day was 
but I don't really care.

I opine that while it may hurt the nice guy's feelings to have been rejected by the girl, it does not pay for the good guy to change his attitude and become a 'bad guy'. Not all good girls become susceptible to the bad guys charms and so developing an ungentlemanly attitude will only drive the good ladies away.


So enjoy the song, but keep in mind that not all good guys lose the girl. In fact, nice guys end up with the nice girls!

SONG OF THE MOMENT - MAN DOWN

RIHANNA's 'Man Down' from her 'Loud' album has been on repeat in my mind and on my ipod for the past week. I find myself suddenly bursting out singing "Rom po po pom pom po po pom rom po po pom man dooown!" or "why did I have to pull the trigger, pull the trigger, pull the trigger, boom" at the most inappropriate moments. It's like the song has rooted itself deep in my delinquent brain. The lyrics have become a sort of mantra to me. They escape from my mouth while I'm in the shower, eating, reading and even while listening to other songs. 


However, until lately, I've not been a big fan of Rihanna ever since her stupendous 'Good girl gone bad' transformation. One cannot but consider whether her encounter with the beast in Chris Brown was the basis for this transition from the 'good girl' to the 'bad girl'.


Right now I am really feeling her 'Loud' album. When 'What's my name' was released, I joined the countless others who feverishly belted out the lyrics of the song on repeat. I'm loving how she is giving us a taste of her roots by adding that Caribbean vibe to her songs. 


'Man down' is most definitely my favourite track from the album.


Here's to hoping that Rihanna doesn't make another totally confusing image revamp. 


It's one thing to try to keep us guessing but it's another when we're totally lost!
